John 3:16 (KJV) “For God so loved the world, that He gave His ONLY begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
The month of December is a season of gift-giving. In this month, we are reminded of God’s indescribable gift – Jesus Christ, the gift of God which is above all gifts. Jesus Christ was God’s ONLY begotten Son. This means, Jesus is the “ONLY ONE of its kind” – no one else like Him exist (Greek = monogenēs). The Greek word translated “begotten” emphasizes the “indescribable emotional value and attachment” God the Father has for Jesus Christ. It also emphasizes the irreplaceable value of Jesus Christ.
Jesus is the one-of-a-kind Son, unique in nature, sharing the same essence as the Father, eternally and incomparably God’s Son. The offering of such a person for the salvation of all men, is the offering or gift above all gifts. Rejecting such a Gift from God has several implications. First, rejecting the Son is rejecting God Himself. John 5:23 says, “He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.” Secondly, rejecting the precious gift of God equals the loss of the ONLY WAY to SALVATION. John 3:18 says “He that believeth not is condemned already…” Thirdly, because Christ alone deals decisively with sin, rejecting Him leaves a person under the weight of unresolved guilt. John 8:24 says “If ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.” Believers become children of God only through the ONLY begotten Son. John 1:12 says, “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.” Hallelujah! Be very sure today, that you have publicly declared your acceptance of the “Gift above all gifts.”
