Mark 8:36 (KJV) “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”
There is the human tendency to prioritize visible success over eternal realities. Earthly success without eternal salvation is spiritual bankruptcy. The maximum possible earthly achievement of a man includes wealth, power, status, pleasure, and influence. None of these achievements can compensate for the loss of the soul. The eternity of your soul is of more value than any achievement, acquisition, or position. Earthly gain is measurable; eternal loss is immeasurable. Earthly success without eternal salvation is the greatest failure.
Now, to “lose” the soul is to be separated from God (Isa. 59:2), to miss eternal life (John 3:16), and to forfeit one’s true purpose and destiny. The soul is the eternal part of man, far more valuable than anything temporal. Once lost, it cannot be bought back with earthly currency (v.37). The soul outlives the world; therefore, it must outrank the world. Nothing gained in time can compensate for what is lost in eternity. The wisest investment a person can make is the salvation of his soul. May the LORD our God grant us wisdom!
