Genesis 2:18 (KJV) “And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.”
When the LORD God was done creating the heavens and the earth, He “saw everything that He had made, and behold, it was very good” (Gen. 1:31; KJV). But in today’s Scriptural text, the LORD said, “It is not good that the man should be alone.” This is the first time in Scripture that God declares something “not good.” The LORD God identifies “aloneness” as a bad thing or as incompleteness. The lack of appropriate or suitable companionship at any level of relationship is bad. We as humans are created for relationship, not isolation. Perfection in creation includes community and companionship, not mere productivity.
Adam had fellowship with God, authority and dominion over creation, and a beautiful garden of Eden, yet the LORD God says this was still insufficient. This teaches that spirituality does not cancel the need for human relationships. But note that it was the LORD God that discerned the need of a help meet (suitable) for Adam. The LORD God knows the exact kind of help suitable for us. This is why the Scripture says, “lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths” (Pro. 3:5-6; KJV). One of the reasons why there are a lot of failed marriages is because men are shortsighted regarding the help “meet” for them. In the choice of a spouse for example, some men place so much value on beauty, money, ethnicity, complexion, etc. The “help meet” for you MUST be a STRENGTH and SUPPORT to you where you are weak. In any type of relationship, it is wisdom to submit in humility, to the strength and support of your God-given helper. Glory to God!
