Luke 1:32 (KJV) “He shall be GREAT, and shall be called the Son of the Highest”
In our Scriptural text today, the angel Gabriel announces that the child Jesus that was to be born by a virgin Mary, shall be GREAT. The word “great” in Greek is “megas”. In the context of the person of Jesus Christ, it means “beyond ordinary”. This greatness implies being “beyond human measure and comprehension”; it is not greatness that can be measured by the standard of men. This is a greatness that has its origin ONLY in God. Psalms 48:1 tells us that “Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised ...” Hallelujah!!!
The greatness of Jesus is multi-dimensional. Jesus is great in His nature (ontological greatness – greatness of being). How? He is the uncreated Son, the Eternal Word, and the “God” made manifest in the flesh. Jesus is great in His mission. Of all men born into this world, only Jesus was born to deal with sin, death, and hell. Jesus is great in His kingdom. The Bible says, “… of his kingdom there shall be no end” (Luke 1:33; KJV). Jesus is great in His power and authority. Speaking of Himself, Jesus said, “All POWER is given unto me in heaven and in earth” (Mat. 28:18; KJV). Glory to God! Let’s praise the greatness of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
